Medicinal cannabis refers to the use of cannabis plant or its derivatives to treat or manage medical conditions or symptoms. Cannabis contains compounds called cannabinoids, including tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD), which have therapeutic effects. The use of medicinal cannabis is regulated differently in different countries and regions, with some having legalized its use while others still prohibit it. It’s important to note that more research is needed to fully understand the potential benefits and risks of medicinal cannabis.

Cards are issued at the two dispensaries or from the Office of the Antigua and Barbuda Medicinal Cannabis Authority

Currently there is currently over 3456 medicinal cannabis card holder patients in Antigua and Barbuda.

A curriculum is currently being developed for use in the schools within Antigua and Barbuda. As for medical students there is a separate course which must be completed in addition to their medical licence.

A regular citizen is allowed 15 grams of cannabis on their person while a medicinal cannabis patient is allowed up to 2 ounces of cannabis.

All cannabis businesses within the state of Antigua and Barbuda are governed by the standards and regulations of the Cannabis Act of 2018. They must keep records from seed to sale of each plant. Members from the Authority should be able to request these records at any time to follow-up.

The cultivation site must keep records of every aspect of the plant cycle from cutting to the harvesting, drying to sale of the plant.

A patient can be issued a card for: 1 Day, 6 Months or 1 Year

The recommended age by law is 18 years old. The doctor may prescribe to a patient who is younger based on the ailment. This is however done on an individual basis.
